As a digital marketer that has advertised on Facebook, Instagram, and Google I dabbled in a bit of native advertising here is what I have to say about what it is. 

Native advertising is a method where you create an advertisement that blends in natively with the website that you are advertising on. You have probably been on a website and have seen these ads but did not realize that they were native ads. They usually have eye-catching images and catchy titles that make you want to click on them.

Some native advertising examples are shown below where you can see that these advertisements look exactly like the content on the website.  Now when you click on one of these ads you will be taken to another website where you will land on what looks like a regular article but is actually an advertorial.  In some instances, websites are just driving huge amounts of traffic to their website because they are doing what is called advertising Arbitrage. You can find a lot of these ads mostly on news websites like CNN, Fox News, and Breitbart.

There are quite a few native advertising platforms out there for example Revcontent,  Taboola and Outbrain are the three most popular. If you’re just brand new to the native advertising world I would recommend that you start off with either Revcontent or Outbrain because Taboola requires a huge budget which many beginners don’t have. 


Revcontent was founded in 2013 and is one of the newer native advertising platforms that is growing extremely fast. It is a great platform to focus ad spend on engaged and relevant consumers. Revcontent allows a minimum of $100 a day ad budget which is far less than other platforms out there. This is mainly why many beginners that are getting into native advertising find themselves choosing Revcontent.  This platform offers tons of publishers you can advertise on like Breitbart, Washington Press, rt news, and many more. These sites get a ton of traffic meaning you can reach thousands of people.

Outbrain is one of the bigger platforms and can offer a huge inventory of traffic.

Taboola is the world’s most popular content discovery & native advertising platform for publishers and advertisers. Its native ads appear within customizable widgets within the feed or at the bottom, top or side of blog posts.

Taboola allows a $100 ad budget but you have to deposit $1000 to get started. When you think native ads taboola is king but they are the most expensive.

In conclusion native advertising can be a very effective marketing technique.  Platforms like Revcontent, Outbrain, and Taboola offer great ways to advertise on huge websites like Breitbart, CNN and Fox News, and many others. Now as a beginner I recommend using Revcontent. Outbrain is also another great choice but can be picky with the ad content that you want to advertise the same with Taboola.
